Dr. Carlos Molina

Dr. Molina is a Consultant General Surgeon specializing in the surgery of the Digestive System and the surgical management of obesity.

He is currently the medical director of the Marbella Surgery Clinic and concentrates most of his surgical activity at HC Hospital (Marbella High Care) and Clínica Ochoa. He also performs ambulatory endoscopic procedures at Quore Clinic in Sotogrande and The Medical Centre in San Pedro Alcántara.

He studied Medicine at the Medical Universities of Córdoba and Málaga and graduated as a Licensee in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Málaga in 1990.

After his medical qualification he moved to the United Kingdom to complete his training as a surgeon becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1996. He has written numerous scientific papers and has a Master degree in Techniques in Health Research at the University of Southampton 1999. In 2000 he was honoured with the prestigious National Award of the United Kingdom Medical Inventor of the Year for an invention related to the prevention of intra-abdominal adhesions.

He specializes in minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery and has been involved in advance research in relation with these minimally invasive techniques.

During the past 14 years Dr. Molina has maintained a successful private practice in Marbella and has participated in the implementation of obesity surgery and laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques in numerous hospitals and medical centres such as Clínica Incosol, in Marbella, Hospital Vía de la Plata, Zafra, Clínica de la Encarnación (CHIP Hospital, Málaga), Hospital La Salud and Clínica La Inmaculada in Granada, Hospital Xanit Internacional in Benalmádena, Hospital Marbella High Care and Clínica Ochoa in Marbella, Clínica Quore in Sotogrande and The Medical Centre in San Pedro Alcántara.

One of his main interests is the surgical treatment of obesity (Bariatric Surgery) which he started practising back in 1998 whilst he was working in the UK. From the initial open surgery he is now performing minimally invasive techniques such as intra-gastric balloon, adjustable gastric band, the gastric sleeve and gastric plication.

He is a pioneer in Spain in the treatment of obesity with the Intra-gastric balloon, forming part of the multidisciplinary team which placed the first balloon in Andalucía, in late 2001.

Over the past few years Dr. Molina has become one of the most experienced surgeons in Spain in the gastric band technique having being the Spanish representative for Spain on international expert committees in relation with this particular technique.

A major concern of Dr. Molina is to keep training updated and therefore participates and collaborates in numerous meetings and workshops nationally and internationally. Recent events attended include:

  • Intensive Course in vertical gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric plication, Obesity Control Center, Tijuana, Méjico, validated by the University of California with Dr. Ariel Ortiz.
